Premium HiFi headphones, open

The cult object tested and lauded by music lovers

The DT 990 Edition headphones have been winning the hearts of countless HiFi and music enthusiasts since the 1980s. Boasting vibrant and natural sound, these headphones have been a popular choice for many years and are suitable for many music styles.
The DT 990 Edition has been part of the beyerdynamic portfolio for more than 20 years and still enjoys exceptional popularity. All components are available as replacement parts, making the DT 990 Edition a reliable companion for many years to come.

Music radiates all the way to the fingertips

The DT 990 Edition comes in an open back design. This means that background noise outside the headphones remains clearly discernible even at higher volumes. This design lends the music a feeling of a wide soundstage, an appreciation of space that gives almost the same sense of enjoyment as listening to music with loudspeakers. The sound is spectacular. Distinctive highs and intense bass combine to produce a perfect richness of sound that delights rock and pop enthusiasts in particular.

Excellent wearing comfort

The flexible headband and silky-smooth ear pads ensure wearing comfort "par excellence". The ear pads are known for their breathable and skin-friendly velour, enabling the listener to enjoy music for hours without any excessive build-up of heat.
The combination of comfortable headband and ear pads as well as yokes made from aluminium lend the headphones a stable exterior and a pleasant fit for long listening sessions.

Difference compared to DT 990 PRO version

The DT 990 Edition headset for use at home and the DT 990 PRO studio headset: both are identical when it comes to sound. Identically designed acoustic transducers are used. However, the Edition models have a somewhat softer headband for enjoying music at home while the Pro headset has a slightly tighter fit on the head so that it doesn't move even in case of faster movements in everyday studio use. Moreover, the PRO version is supplied with a coiled cable and the Edition version with a straight cable.

Three variants for different playback devices

The 600-ohm version is suitable for HiFi systems with especially powerful headphone outputs or for use with special headphone amplifiers. The 250 ohm version of the DT 990 Edition was developed for use at home on a stereo system. The 32 ohm version is recommended for versatile use including on mobile devices such as tablets or smartphones.

The DT 990 Edition is available as a Manufaktur edition and can thus be custom designed to suit your requirements. Choose from a range of colours, preferred impedance, housing parts and different cables. All needs can thus be met.

"Listeners are rewarded with an enveloping experience; the DT 990's large earcups create a listening environment all their own, and like all good open headphone designs, the DT 990 provides an excellent sense of space. If you're looking for an accurate headphone pair that doesn't skimp on the lows, the DT 990 won't disappoint."

"The metallic and black leather DT 990 look almost intimidating at first—it's a huge set of headphones, with circumaural (over-the-ear) earcups so substantial in size that your ears feel almost lost in them. The plush cushioning of the circular earpads surround the ears while barely touching them. An open headphone design means the grilles hiding the drivers sit well off the ear, and sound is pushed outward through vented slots on the outer panel of each earcup. Despite the bulky design, the DT 990 is lightweight for its size, and exceedingly comfortable even during longer listening sessions."

"(...) the DT 990 delivers the powerful deep sub-bass of The Knife's "Silent Shout" effortlessly. No aspect of the low-end goes missing here, and the high-mids and highs are perfectly clear and present. This is a near-flat response sound signature, but a flat response that includes the subwoofer range, as well. So you get plenty of intense, deep bass as long as it's in the mix, but nothing is overtly boosted or exaggerated. This is one reason I think the DT 990 makes an excellent mix-checking headphone pair. It's too bad the open design eliminates it as an option for studio tracking headphones, as well."

"(...) however, the Beyerdynamic DT 990 (32 Ohm) is a strong option for music lovers looking to get for an accurate sound without sacrificing depth."

For large auditoriums there are customised microphone concepts, for individual ears unique headphone are manufactured. The lot size of one becomes a core message at the company’s headquarters in Heilbronn. On their website beyerdynamic provide a headphone configurator, like the car industry, for the DT 880 and DT 990 over-ear headphones. Which colour, which leather, perhaps a plate with your name? This is a good sign: The individuality costs only a little more than the standard model; at best a modest waiting time of two weeks.

"(...) and are impressed with the results – after they’ve been run-in extensively, mind."

"Give them anything less than 72 hours to warm-up and music is tainted by an uncomfortable trebly edge. When the edge is taken off, though, the Beyerdynamics have a likeable, even temperament."

"The mid-range is clear and comes through a rich bass and well judged treble."

"The Beyers fill their spacious and airy presentation with detail and display balance too, having no trouble uncovering the small narrative quips in Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP2 album."

"However, if you regularly have lengthy listening sessions to your music, you will appreciate the work Beyerdynamic has put into their build: (replaceable) grey velour ear pads epitomise comfort, fitting snugly around your ears, while gently clasping your head with the right amount of snugness."

"The spring steel headband means the ear cups can stretch out almost horizontal, too, so you will be hard-pushed to find a head size it doesn’t accommodate."

"What’s more, the thick leather-type cushioning underneath makes the band feel inconspicuous."

"Verdict: Offering a hugely detailed, open sound and unquestionable comfort, the DT 990 Premiums have a lot going for them. If you can live with a loss in bass punch, these headphones can sit proudly next to your system."

DT 900 Edition: Highest recommendation possible at this price point 06/2013

"Sound Quality: Treble

The treble frequencies on the Beyerdynamic DT990 Premiums are very detailed and accurate but never harsh or ear-piercing, whilst being very well extended and open. The higher frequencies do however lack that added layer of top end detail which would give them maximum airiness and the ambience that can be heard on acoustic instruments. Altogether very enjoyable and non-fatiguing.

The midrange on the DT990 is gorgeous, smooth, well articulated but not forward, it’s fairly neutral and very well balanced which allows the treble to never overpower but really shine through.  The control to the midrange is phenomenal; listening to vocals on them is a real treat.

Nicely detailed, extremely accurate and has great texture with extension. For complete bass heads they may not have the clout and punch your after but we are talking about splitting hairs here. The bass was easily full enough and packed plenty of upper bass slap for me.

Throughout the entire frequency range the dynamics are excellent, they are not fatiguing nor subdued, I found them to be at a very pleasant level and extremely satisfying.

Very wide and open, I was surprised at how well the central focus to an artists vocal were portrayed, but with a midband like these it had to be strong. Staging was layer out in front of me in the centre and arced around my head parallel to its centre distance. I would have liked it to be a little further from me but was very happy.

In conclusion I would say that for vocal performances, whether its pop, acoustic, country, classical or any other variation, these headphones are incredible. The midrange is absolutely sublime!

Other types of music need not be ignored however as everything I listened to was massively enjoyable, had great resolution and staging with fantastic dynamics.

The build quality is high. The ear pads, the velour along with the comfy headband and hugging feel on your head just lets you wear these cans all day long. Matched with the glorious sound they produce I give these the highest recommendation possible at this price point."

"The Beyer DT 990 is among the world's best open-back dynamic headphones. It has been a favorite among professional recording engineers and music lovers for 25 years for its great sound, moderate price and now solid build quality. The DT 990 has unusually clean, clear, uncolored and open sound ideal for any kind of music."

"The DT 990 is a Beyer DT 880 with boosted bass and treble to satisfy the home Hi-Fi market. Except for the tonal balance and cosmetic differences, they are the same."

"These are tough, well-built, inexpensive and great-sounding headphones. I prefer the Beyer DT 880 for more natural sound, while many people will prefer the boosted bass and treble of these DT 990."

"The DT 990 sounds clean and open right out of the box without any break-in, however compared to the DT 880, the DT 990 has its bass boosted a few dB around 60 Hz, with less bass below that. Most people will probably prefer this boosted bass, but it will annoy careful listeners, making us look for a 60 Hz slider to dip a few dB. The DT 990's bass bump obscures deeper bass, which isn't hidden in the DT 880."

"The "boomy" bass of the DT 990 is boomy only in comparision to other very fine headphones like the DT 880. It is nothing like the boom from your neighbor's kid's car stereo; the boom is just a few dBs of boost around 60 Hz, not 15 dB."

"The Beyer DT 990 are a very well made, no-surprises traditional headphones."

"The earpads are semi-soft and covered with fuzzy velour. The pads ride around your ears, not touching them. They stick well on my head as I move around."

"The DT 990 are comfy and not stuffy when worn all day.The DT 990 use moderate to low spring pressure."

"The DT 990 is made of almost all metal, and real metal (...)."

DT 990 Edition: Best sets of headphones I’ve listened to 10/2010
Title: Beyerdynamic DT990 Premium Review

"Design, Build, Fit and Finish
The DT990’s were made for people who look for quality in the money they spend on some cans. The headphones are made of high quality materials all the way around.  The outer ear casings are made out of aluminum as are the portions that connect up to the headband.  The headband is made of an incredible soft piece of leather with great amounts of padding within.  These headphones have a single cable design where the cable comes down from the left ear and the cable is thick and sturdy.  The outer shell of the headphone also has a louvered look that is unique and interesting looking.  To finish things off, the ear pads are made of a high quality, soft velour – more on that in the next section.  One final note is that these are Open headphones meaning that they let sound in and out.  This is by design to create a wider, more open soundstage.

Wow – that pretty much sums up the comfort.  I’ve never put on a set of headphones that was the perfect balance of weight, ear comfort, clamping pressure like the DT990 Premiums are.  A lot of thought and planning went into creating headphones that you could literally wear all day.  With the velour pads, your ears will never sweat and it feels like pillows gently hugging your head.  The clamping pressure on the DT990’s is absolutely perfect – not too tight as to give you a headache and not too light to have these slipping off your head.  Also, worth mentioning is the head band – extremely soft and padded to the hilt.  The interesting thing is, you  notice that these are on your head – not in an annoying way that many headphones are “there” but rather they are so comfortable and cool (temperature) that you’re just aware of how very comfortable they are!  Fantastic

The DT990 again didn’t fail to please in the bass department. The bass is slightly boosted in the DT990’s – not obnoxiously so, rather to a degree that most people will appreciate.  There was plenty of impact and oomph when pushed on a flat EQ (no bass boost) from the media player. I had no problem picking out each distinct note in any genre of music I tried (and I tried them all) and there was plenty of presence and detail in each and every note. The one thing I will say, is if you are a bass head, then these probably won’t fit the bill so much.  I hooked these up to the Fiio E11 and tried out the various levels of bass boost and the DT990 Premiums really don’t like to be EQ’d up on the bass. Again, they do a wonderful job without EQ’ing so that was just a test on my part, but I thought I’d point that out for all you bass lovers out there.

The midrange on the DT990’s just steal the show – in a word – amazing!  Seriously, and this is no joke – these have some of the richest, smoothest mids I’ve ever heard on any set of headphones in this price range.  Female vocalists sounded flat out incredible in these headphones. I point out female vocalists because these are the ones that can become difficult to listen to if the midrange is overblown. Adele, Rebecca Ferguson – if you listen to these women in the DT990 Premiums, you’ll be absolutely floored. You’ll literally feel like you’re getting a personal audition from these two vocal powerhouses and you’ll yearn for more.  I don’t want to discount how well these do the male vocalists though. Men like Josh Groban, Michael Buble and the like sound incredible in these headphones as well. If you are a fan of horned instruments, vocalists, guitars or anything that takes advantage of that frequency band we call the midrange, then you really need to check these out.

The DT990’s again did a nice job on the treble but it’s just completely outclassed by the midrange. When you notice something that’s done so perfectly, it’s easy to pick on the things that aren’t quite so.  This is not to say that the treble is bad – as a matter of fact, it’s far from it. It’s better than most I’ve heard, but it’s lacking a touch of detail such as a person’s fingers sliding along the fretboard of a guitar, or the sound of a bow running across the strings on a violin. It’s that bit of airiness that’s missing that keeps the treble from being on par with the flawless midrange. One final closing thought on the treble – the one thing that I love about it is that it’s not lost in the bass and midrange – the sound is perfectly balanced throughout the volume range so you always hear it clearly and without any sibilance or harshness.

I hope by the time you’re reading this conclusion (...) that you already know how much I enjoyed these headphones. For the price they’re going for on the street (less than a set of Beats Studios), you’re getting a truly high end set of headphones. This is the Mercedes Benz E-class when you’re talking headphones for much less than what I’d expect to pay for this kind of quality in both build and sound quality. This is one of the best sets of headphones I’ve listened to – and believe me, with comfort like this you can listen to them a LONG time! Just keep in mind, depending on which ohm version you’re looking at, you’ll need to consider which amp you’d like to pair with these, and then you can kick back and close your eyes for extended and truly involving one on one listening sessions with your favorite musicians."

DT 990 Edition: Sound is beautiful controlled and precise 08/2010
Title: Beyerdynamic DT-990 Premium 600 Ohm Audiophile Version Headphone
Author: Chris Martens 08/2010
Title: Beyerdynamic DT-990 Premium 600 Ohm Audiophile Version Headphone
Author: Chris Martens

"For this test we tried, at Beyerdynamic’s recommendation, the 600-Ohm Audiophile Version of the DT-990, and found its sound beautifully controlled and precise."

"OVERVIEW: Consider this headphone if: you want an exceptionally light, comfortable, and beautifully made open-back headphone, and that sounds open, alive, and very revealing (in the best sense of that word)."

"Look further if: you require tonal balance that offers textbook neutrality, or if you require a closed-back or semi-closed-back headphones (if those are your priorities, the DT-880PRO is the better choice)."

"Ratings (relative to comparably priced headphones):

• Tonal Balance: 8.5
• Frequency Extremes: 9.5
• Clarity: 9.5
• Dynamics: 9.5 (note: performance in this area is amplifier dependant)
• Comfort/Fit: 9
• Sensitivity: 8
• Value: 9 "

"First, as mentioned above, the DT-990 Premium is a very revealing (or analytical) headphone, and I think this has much to do with the fact that it may be one of the most fine-grained dynamic headphones in its price class."

"Sonically speaking, the DT-990 is like that fine-grain screen, so that sounds—even very subtle, low-level sounds that might ordinarily get buried in the playback mix—suddenly unfold against a grain-free background and are made plain as day. This factor alone makes the DT-990 a joy to hear."

"Second, the DT-990 has an open and dynamically alive sound, which I feel sets it apart from the DT-880. Except when driven by very powerful amplifiers, the DT-880 can have an ever-so-light constricted sound (as if it’s not being fed with quite enough power to really throw back its head and sing properly). By contrast, the DT-990, perhaps because it is an open-back design, has a more expressive character that takes large -scale dynamic shifts in stride while also effortlessly revealing subtle small-scale shifts in dynamic emphasis."

"The tonal balance of the DT-990 is not, strictly speaking, neutrally balanced. The headphone does, as Beyerdynamic’s literature suggests, offer “strong bass and treble,” which will lead many to pose this question: just how strongly are the bass and treble emphasized? The answer is that the DT-990’s two regions of tonal emphasis are both relatively tasteful and not garishly exaggerated. As a result, the DT-990’s bass, though somewhat forward sounding, is consistently taut, punchy and well controlled—not loose, boomy, or overblown. Similar, the DT-990’s extreme highs (roughly 10kHz and up) are upturned in response, but for the most part sound smooth and sweet—not edgy, strident, or brittle."

"While proponents of strict neutrality (and under most circumstances I am one) might ultimately choose a headphone other than this one, I think prospective buyers would do well to listen to the DT-990 with an open mind, and then to decide how they feel about its frequency response characteristics. After I listened to the DT-990 on a few favorite recordings, I personally found its sound quite easy to embrace."

It is comfortable when wearing and it sits right without creating any pressure. The sound is really spectacular with powerful highs and a crispy bass. It is never too intrusive, but it is also not very light. A wonderful reproduction of vocals.
