Title: Beyerdynamic Byron sound more expensive than they really are

"Affordable earphones don’t always have to be a compromise, and the Byron just proves that with resounding clarity."

"We feel that the cable Beyerdynamic has bestowed upon the Byron is quite sturdy. One of the reasons for our belief is that it doesn’t twist or tangle itself like lesser quality earphone cables. This should be able to withstand some accidental tugs and rough use, and won’t break a sweat."

"Plug these in, and you’ll realise soon enough that the sound signature that you get from Beyerdynamic’s neodymium audio drivers in each ear is quite smooth and balanced. This doesn’t lean towards vocals or bass specifically. However, the best part would perhaps be the fact that the mid-range frequencies are quite strong, which enhances the overall detailing of whatever track it is that you are listening to. While the sound signature remains neutral, the tweaks that Beyerdynamic has done make the Byron stand apart from rivals (...). First up, the sound isn’t exactly warm, but listening to this for hours on end is quite relaxing as there isn’t any sharp edge to the vocals or too heavy bass that might give you a headache."

"Clarity remains pristine even at high volume levels, which isn’t something that similarly priced earphones can truly be able to claim."

"The Byron does all things well, and doesn’t limit itself to any specific music genre. The powerful sound cannot be ignored, and in the case of most rivals, cannot be replicated too."

Seriously classy in-ear headphones with the detail to out-do the competition 03/2017

"It’s a shame, as these earphones have a sound we defy you not to like. The Byrons aren’t like some of the company’s studio headphones, designed for sound engineers or home studio buffs who need extreme accuracy - they’re for everyday folk - but they do come with a shot of that Beyerdynamic special sauce. That means that they’re the truest-sounding earphones in this test, with great mid-range detail that outdoes long-term Stuff favourite (...). There’s good punch to the bass too, getting you full, engaging sound without any sense of slouchy sludge you’ll hear in some less capable affordable pairs. Their treble isn’t super-sparky but doesn’t lack detail either. These are the kind of earphones you can wear all day, and that can skip between genres like it’s no big deal."

"They also come with a basic felt carry pouch, three pairs of tips and a have a removable shirt clip on the cable. Despite looking a little plain, the design is good. The earpieces are metal apart from the easy-gripper ring of rubber at the back. Ultimately, the Byrons are a good argument for the idea you don’t really need to spend more than £50 on earphones."

"beyerdynamic’s long-standing expertise with headphones makes its mark on the new Byrons – there’s a level of heft and control to the sound that you don’t tend to hear with budget in-ears. It’s the way they deliver the deep, sludgy guitars in Stone Temple Pilot’s Big Empty; the way they tie all the complex musical strands together in Radiohead’s 15 Step; the way they handle the stop and start of notes with precision and clarity. It’s a mature presentation from in-ears costing just £50."

"The midrange and treble are the highlight here. There’s plenty of headroom for the top end to soar, giving Amanda Palmer’s clear, passionate vocals and the tinkling piano notes in The Bed Song space to flourish. Voices are conveyed with a natural, nuanced touch that leaves you hanging on to every word. There are no hard or bright edges here, but we’d still recommend a day or two’s running in to get the headphones playing their best. After that, you’ll find yourself tapping along to the Hamilton soundtrack, with the melodic hip hop tracks and rapid fire repartee relying on the headphones’ punctual timing and clear, crisp detail to make an impression."

"There’s a smoothness to the Byrons that make them easy to listen to over long hours."

"beyerdynamic isn’t one for flashy colours and fancy frills – it has stuck with its classic black-and-metal look, and we can’t fault the Byrons’ sleek, modern appearance. The earbuds are petite and you’ll barely feel them in your ears."

"Once in, these in-ears are comfortable to wear for hours. The slim, sturdy cable doesn’t feel flimsy, nor is it prone to twisting or tangling."

"The standard cable has a three-button remote for playback control and mic for answering calls. It works seamlessly with Android and Apple smartphones alike: playing, pausing and skipping tracks and adjusting the volume is instantly done. You can also store the Byrons in the included soft pouch, which is roomy enough to carry extra ear tips, chargers, cables and more. Handy for travelling."

"(...) have been our favourite budget in-ears for the past five years. There have been few contenders to even come close to toppling them from their Award-winning perch. But these Beyerdynamic Byrons have done just that. (...) the Byrons are simply more revealing and accomplished. The amount of authority, rhythmic precision and subtlety they deliver at this price is superb – and entirely worth £10 more than their long-standing rivals. The Byrons are the new budget in-ears to beat."

+ Excellent detail, weight and precision
+ Authoritative and subtle
+ Evenly balanced midrange and treble
+ Comfortable, sturdy build

Verdict: five stars (of five)

Despite the relatively low price these headphones are of a high quality. There are no annoying plastic parts from the production to see and the metal housing of the eartips appears solid and robust. Furthermore the cables of two millimetres do not give you the feeling that the cable will break which is responsible for a failure of 95% of all my previous headphones. It only took me a little while to get used to the 90° angled jack plug. Also the small plastic housing in the shape of a tube with buttons and microphone make a very solid impression and give no reason to complain. In combination with a weight of 13 grams these headphones are very comfortable in operating and wearing.

There is not much to say about the design. It is very discreet with in-ears. Black cable, black plastic parts. Only the silvery metal housings and the beyerdynamic logo give a pleasant emphasis.

As already mentioned the microphone is in the tube-like controller. It is said that the button functions are only compatible with Android devices, but functions such as Start, Stop, next/previous sound also work with IOS (tested with IOS9) or MIUI8. The microphone completely meets its purpose and according to the dialogue partner there is nothing to complain about. Even when you phone while walking there is no excessive noise or background noise caused by cable movements.

Well, let’s have a look at the most important aspect with headphones: the sound! Here the manufacturer definitely does not give any promise they cannot keep. Clear highs, discreet bass, no matter which genre. Everything is free from distortion and without any dropouts. Furthermore, voices are reproduced very well. Disturbing ambient noise is hardly heard due to the in-ear construction.

Conclusion: In summary the Byron is a very good headphone in this price class. The reproduction of music is clean and the sound is very impressive. The workmanship is very solid. The microphone and controller meet their purpose, even with IOS. The design is simple and discreet.

When using mobile phones or when being on the move you also want to enjoy a real good sound. This is exactly what the new Byron series from beyerdynamic provides.

At present this series includes three models. The Byron is a wired in-ear headphone, which is available at a very reasonable price of 50 Euro with a remote control optimised for Android devices.  In contrast to this the Byron BT and BTA models operate with Bluetooth – thus they are wirelessly connected with the appropriate device – and provide an extremely high comfort of wearing as well as an excellent sound, whereas the BTA also supports the AAC codec and is also the top of the series.

All three models give a very noble and subtle impression when they are first unpacked. After all, looks play a part as well, apart from that the good durability is not unimportant. All three models come with a smart case for storage and three pairs of eartips – the latter is important so that the listener can optimally adapt the earphone to one’s ears making the in-ear headphones optimally unfolding their sound.

Let's get straight to the beyerdynamic Byron, because this one you simply plug it in and get started straight away. When you use the right eartip for your ear, the earphones fit very comfortably and seal well, guaranteeing the sound of the closed earphones does not penetrate to the outside and you receive a lot of bass. The sound is directly convincing, it is tidy and has a rich boost. There is no comparison to the standard earphones supplied with my Samsung smartphone, it is at least one category higher. When phoning, the speech quality benefits from the beyerdynamic.  The remote control for Android devices also works perfectly and can be easily and quickly operated.

The new Byron series from beyerdynamic is convincing right away, and if you just want to replace the supplied headphones of your smartphone and look for good sound, comfort and solid manufacturing, the Byron Wired is the right choice for you. You receive a real good sound at a very reasonable price. Those who prefer the comfort of a wireless headphone or who have a device without headphone socket can choose between the two Byron BT and BTA models which feature a great design and manufacture and which can be comfortably worn and sound really great. The exquisite BTA is a little but up in all categories – whether you want to pay the extra price, you should decide when comparing the sound. I am definitely delighted, the Byron BT and the wired model provide a real great sound at a fair price. It is strongly recommended to try it out.
